Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a biodegradable, biocompatible synthetic material used in medicine for decades — the same material in dissolvable sutures. Here's exactly how it works inside your skin.

Injection

Sculptra is injected in a diluted solution into targeted facial zones. The initial volume visible immediately post-treatment is from the dilution fluid, not the PLLA — this resolves within 24–72 hours. This is normal and expected.

Absorption

Over the following weeks, your body absorbs the water carrier. The PLLA microparticles remain and are recognized as a localized foreign body — triggering a controlled, targeted healing response from your immune system.

Collagen Activation

Fibroblasts — the cells responsible for producing collagen — are recruited to the PLLA sites. They begin generating new Type I and Type III collagen strands around the microparticles over the following 6–8 weeks.

Volume Rebuilt
