Sculptra vs. Filler — answered
What is the difference between Sculptra and dermal filler?+
Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid) is a collagen stimulator — it triggers your body to produce its own collagen over 3–6 months, rebuilding structure gradually. HA dermal fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, RHA) physically add volume immediately where injected. Sculptra lasts 2–3 years; HA filler lasts 12–18 months. They target different kinds of volume loss and are frequently used together in a comprehensive facial rejuvenation plan.
Is Sculptra painful?+
Sculptra injections are comparable to dermal filler in terms of discomfort. The product is diluted in sterile water and lidocaine before injection, which reduces discomfort significantly. Patients may experience tenderness, swelling, and occasional small nodules at the injection sites in the days following — these are managed with gentle massage per your provider's instructions.
Can I get Sculptra if I've had a lot of filler before?+
Yes — and this is actually a common scenario. Many patients who have accumulated filler over years want to transition to a more natural-looking structural approach. Sculptra helps rebuild the underlying collagen architecture, which often means less filler is needed to achieve the same — or better — results over time. Your provider will evaluate your existing filler and design a plan accordingly.
How many vials of Sculptra will I need?+
The general clinical rule of thumb is one vial per decade of age — so a 45-year-old patient typically needs approximately 4–5 vials total, spread across 2–3 sessions. This is a starting estimate; your provider will recommend a specific plan based on your facial anatomy and goals at consultation.
